Columbus Police officer accused of taping nude child facing child porn charges

A Columbus Police officer who is accused of videotaping a young girl who was nude was arrested Thursday, according to Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien.

O'Brien said Raymond Rose III, 30, was arrested and charged Thursday. Columbus Police said he was arrested on allegations of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material and pandering obscenity involving a minor.

Rose has been with the Columbus Division of Police for four years and is with the patrol unit.

Columbus Police said its Internal Affairs Bureau was contacted by a family member of the alleged victim and it immediately notified the division's Special Victims Bureau.

Based on the nature of the allegations, the Special Victims Bureau brought in the Franklin County Internet Crimes Against Children unit.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is now handling the investigation and Columbus Police said the division is fully cooperating with the investigation.

The division police said the officer will be placed on administrative leave, with no arrest powers and no firearm until the resolution of the case.

"When criminal activity is discovered, our duty is to investigate and pursue the appropriate action based on evidence," Columbus Police Chief Thomas Quinlan said. "The fact that it involves one of our own does not change that. The protection of children demands the highest level of priority and investigation. Regardless of who is accused, we support every effort to ensure justice is done.

O'Brien says the felony charges against Rose are serious.

"(They) carry up to 8 years in prison and the charges themselves deal with the production of the video and that is why it is among the most serious of the child pornography charges," he said.

It's an arrest that has the county's top prosecutor sending out a safety reminder.

"Parents need to be watchful even amongst relatives, even amongst neighbors," said O'Brien.

Rose is set to appear in court soon. O'Brien said they will likely present this to the grand jury shortly after.
