COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) -- A Columbus man was sentenced to nine years in prison for the rape of a minor while it was being streamed live on social media.
Raymond Gates, 29, pleaded guilty to one count of rape in connection to a sexual assault that happened at a home on Christina Lane in northeast Columbus on February 27. As part of the deal, Gates will have to register as a sex offender after his jail time concludes.
In court Wednesday, the victim got to speak to Gates face-to-face.
"I feel that being raped has taken away my ability to love life and love as full as I once did. I'm still struggling. Some days are better than others. My life never being the same is the hardest part of all" she said.
Prosecutors said Gates and two females -- the 17-year-old victim and her 18-year-old friend Marina Lonina -- were socializing at his home when he eventually forced himself on the the minor where Lonina then began recorded the attack via the social media app Periscope allowing others online to watch it in real time. Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien said someone from New York state saw it and notified local authorities immediately. Investigators in New York then contacted Columbus Police to report the attack.
