Harsher federal charges to be sought to help combat deadly Columbus gun violence

U.S. Attorney David DeVillers said Wednesday he hoped to bring "shock and awe" to criminals committing gun violence on Columbus streets with a focused effort on getting harsher sentences for those who have firearms illegally.

"We want this to be a warning, we want this to be a shock and awe to the people committing these violent crimes and firearm offenses," he said. 

The effort will focus on two Columbus neighborhoods that have been hot zones for gun violence — Linden and the Hilltop — and on charging defendants in federal court with crimes that have harsher sentences than what state law can provide.

Suspect accused of killing Ohio State student out on bond at time of shooting

A Columbus teenager is back behind bars after being charged with the murder of an Ohio State University student, three days after being released on bond on unrelated charges.

Kinte Mitchell Jr, 18, has been charged with murder in connection with the death of Ohio State student Chase Meola, who was fatally shot Sunday morning at a party in the University District.

Columbus officer formally indicted on child pornography charges

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A Columbus Police officer facing child pornography charges was formally indicted Friday.

A Franklin County Grand Jury has indicted Raymond Albert Rose III, 29, of Columbus, with one count of illegal use of a minor or impaired person in nudity-oriented material or performance, a second-degree felony; one count of pandering sexually-oriented matter involving a minor or impaired person, a second-degree felony; and one count of gross sexual imposition, a third-degree felony.

Man indicted in shooting that killed pregnant teen’s unborn baby

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A man has been indicted on charges he fired shots that left an unborn baby dead in the Linden area.  

According to On Aug. 23 at 7:30 p.m., Columbus Police officers were called to the area of Joyce Ave and Denune Ave. on a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found a pregnant 15-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Columbus woman indicted after 5-year-old drowns in pool

A Franklin County grand jury has indicted a Columbus woman with involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment after her five-year-old son drowned in a pool.

Columbus Police said officers responded to a drowning on July 3 in the 5000 block of Hibernia Dr around 7 p.m. Officers said bystanders had already taken the five-year-old child out of the pool when they arrived.

Columbus Police officer accused of taping nude child facing child porn charges

A Columbus Police officer who is accused of videotaping a young girl who was nude was arrested Thursday, according to Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien.

O'Brien said Raymond Rose III, 30, was arrested and charged Thursday. Columbus Police said he was arrested on allegations of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material and pandering obscenity involving a minor.

Ohio man accused of over a dozen armed robberies in three weeks

One man might spend the rest of his days in prison after a grand jury indicted him Monday on 60 charges related to a slew of armed robberies in Franklin County.

51-year-old Field Harris is accused of robbing 15 businesses in Franklin, Fairfield, and Delaware Counties, 14 of those at gunpoint.

"Not that often where you have 15 armed robberies in less than a month, committed at various locations. Gas stations, flower stores, pharmacies," said Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien.

Columbus man gets 25 years to life for murder during East Side home invasion

A 24-year-old Columbus man was sentenced Thursday to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years for a fatal shooting during a home invasion at an East Side apartment complex.

Demitrious D. McKnight, of the Far East Side, was convicted by a Franklin County jury on Sept. 2 of murder and aggravated burglary in the death of 33-year-old Martin R. Harris.

25-year-old man indicted for two murders that occurred during two-week time span in 2017

COLUMBBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien announced Wednesday that the Franklin County Grand Jury has returned an eight-count indictment against 25-year-old Trever Sands for aggravated murder and murder, which occurred during a two-week time span in 2017.

“This man was 21 years old when he committed two separate and unrelated murders in Franklin County during the time span of two weeks.” O’Brien said. “On April 24, 2017 Jeannot Mendy, 32, was fatally shot in a failed robbery attempt while he was working on his motorcycle in his apartment garage on Lowridge Drive.”
